Welcome to WAFCON year
There is a saying amongst millennial (and 9-5vers) that people greet each other happy new year until the end of January, so we are 12 days early.
The year kicked off early with the 2026 WAFCON draw, as Morocco host their third consecutive tournament and will be looking to avoid another defeat if they make the final.
It’s the first tournament with 16 participants, and the final four countries book an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA World cup in Brazil. The stakes are high and we will be talking more about this in our next article.
Beyond WAFCON, the year has kicked off on a busy note as two Nigerians have found home in new cities in the NWSL. Nicole Payne who have battled injuries in recent time joined the 2024 NWSL Champions, Orlando Pride while the Super Falcons debutant, Chioma Okafor has signed her first professional contract with North Carolina Courage.
