Few hours ago, Barcelona feminine beat Lyon 2:0 to win their second consecutive UEFA Women’s Champions League and their third in four years. Despite joining the NWSL side Bay Fc in January, this win means that Asisat Oshoala has now won three European trophies, the first African male (or female) , to do so. She has also joined the exclusively short list of African women to have won the UWCL.

Because it is Africa Day, we wanted to share you a couple facts about African women footballers that might surprise you;
The most expensive women footballer in the world as of today is African. Her name is Rachel Kundananji and she plays for Zambia and Bay FC. She was signed from Madrid CFF for a record fee of $860,000.
The second most-expensive women footballer in the world is African. Her name is Barbra Banda, she is Zambia’s captain and plays for Orlando Pride. She was bought for a record fee of $740,000. Don’t worry, the next person is not the third most-expensive player but something more interesting.
The fastest brace in the NWSL was scored by an African. Her name is Uchenna Kanu. She scored the brace against Portland FC within the space of 5 minutes and 40 seconds. It is also the earliest brace scored in the NWSL.
An African won the golden boot in the Italian Seria a last season, and won the golden boot in the D1 Arkema this season. Not just that, she became the first player in the last five seasons to lead the table of Goals and Assists simultaneously in the D1 Arkema. Her name is Tabitha Chawinga, and she plays for Malawi.
An African scored the highest number of goals in 2023 ahead of major names like Sam Kerr, Ada Hegerberg, Kadidiatou Diani and lots more. Her name is Temwa Chawinga and she scored 63 goals, winning the IFFHS top scorer of the year award.
